Partnership Pays off for Schools Looking to add Propane-Powered Buses

As buses in the fleet start to age out, district leaders are faced with a tough decision: Do they stick with traditional diesel-powered buses or consider alternative solutions? More and more school administrators are choosing the latter. Propane-powered buses are more viable than ever and afford schools flexibility and critical cost savings throughout the life of the vehicle.

The biggest factors that our districts cite for making the switch to propane are reliability and sustainability. “Propane is clean-burning and reduces harmful emissions, making it safer for both the environment and the students onboard,” says Andy Ernst, marketing manager for CHS Propane. “Propane can also withstand extreme temperatures and isn’t susceptible to gelling in the winter like diesel, which makes for stress-free startups.”

Beyond that, the lower cost per gallon and reduced maintenance cost of up to 50 percent is welcomed by any districts’ bottom line. Schools making the switch will save thousands of dollars per bus in annual fuel costs and maintenance. Multiply those savings by the number of buses in a fleet, and it can save an entire teacher’s salary.

Despite the financial and environmental benefits, the thought of change can sometimes be unnerving for schools. Although some can’t wait to make the switch, others have preconceived notions that give them pause. “While it seems like a big step, it’s one you’ll never regret,” says Brad Sullivan, energy director at Valley Farmers Supply. Valley Farmers Supply is a longstanding CHS propane partner that’s helped area schools transition dozens of buses to propane-power. Sullivan says it’s all about relationships. “We have a passion for our people; the people within the community that so willingly welcomes us in. It’s our duty to make sure our customers are set up for success.” According to Sullivan, starting a conversation about the benefits of propane buses is easy once you’ve demonstrated you have their best interests in mind. Helping to convert local school buses is one of the most impactful ways Valley Farmers Supply has been able to help its community at large.

Each year the number of schools transitioning to propane-powered school buses continues to grow. Today, over 1,000 school districts and contractors across the country transport 1.2 million students daily on buses powered by propane. And the 20,000 plus school buses running on propane provide students a safe, reliable, and cost-effective means of transportation. Working together, CHS Propane and ROUSH CleanTech, an industry-leading, alternative fuels company specializing in propane fuel systems, are educating marketers about the steps to making propane-powered school buses a reality. Through the marketer’s intimate knowledge of the district leaders, bus drivers, maintenance crews and key community players coupled with ROUSH’s expertise, schools are finding it easier than ever to make the switch to propane.

Schools in your community can benefit from converting to propane, and so can your business. Reach out to your CHS Propane account manager to learn how to start the process in your community.
